It goes without saying, but world was a different place before the internet and before cellphones. We used to leave in the morning to go skate or paint or whatever and meet friends at a few different spots in the city. If u didn’t see your friends at one spot, you’d run into them at another one or on the way there. You knew at around what time dinner was and just found yourself back at the house for that without the possibility of being reached. Being connected the way we are today is great, but we are also constantly distracted - if not addicted - to looking at our phones. We can’t help it , the dopamine-driven feedback loops in our brains reward us for the texting, checking our likes, shooting and posting stuff, etc.
Aside from the nostalgic feeling they give me, I feel pay phones represent a certain time period that was free and innocent in certain ways, without the constant distractions that keep us from being fully present in the moment. With the last pay phone recently removed from NYC, this is my attempt to (hopefully) make them a little harder to remove from the streets of LA.

“Angelina” is a Fine Art Multiple printed on heavy-weight Hahnemuhle Photo Rag. The edition was created by silkscreening overprint and 7 colors (up to 6 layers of ink per color) onto an archival pigment print of the photograph. Published by Modern Multiples and printed by Master Printer Ivan Alpuche, this edition marks the first-ever collaboration print for both Lionel Deluy and The Art of Chase.
The widely known photograph, by Lionel Deluy, features a pre-fame Angelina Jolie in one of her early modeling shoots. Shot in the early '90s in a classic Hollywood apartment, this image is part of his eminent “Bathroom Series”, originally published in Vogue magazine. The photo session was one of French-born Lionel’s first shoots in Los Angeles and would serve as an iconic start to a long career of celebrity portraiture.
Chase’s signature psychedelic eyes drip down over the image as if to mark the passage of time. LA has given so much to the Belgian-born street artist, and he has given much back in return. His uplifting artwork has adorned countless walls around LA—and the world—for decades.
Both Lionel and Chase have been LA residents for 25+ years.

Pray to the Gods of Honey // After lots of design and paint work, The Hive’s second location is finally open. I painted a total of 6 areas which include tributes to Albrecht Durer (who first drew the ‘Study of the Hands of an Apostle’ in 1508, and to Okusai, who created the woodblock print ‘The Wave’ in 1829.
The superfood cafe is located at the ground floor of AMLI, a luxury apartment complex in Marina Del Rey.
